The BP MS 150 is an event like no other.

The statistics alone are impressive, as the BP MS 150 stands as the largest MS 150 in North America, with
13,000 registered participants in 2006 and 2007. These 13,000 participants sign up over six months in advance to make the grueling two-day, 150 mile ride trek from Houston to Austin,

More impressive, however, is the real purpose behind the annual ride from Houston to Austin.

The BP MS 150 is a fund-raiser to help thousands of people who live with the daily challenges of multiple sclerosis. Each year, participants accept the challenge to push themselves in raising much-needed funds that support MS research that may one day identify a cure for this devastating disease. Each year, riders go above and beyond the minimum required fund-raising amount because they witness first-hand how their work is helping more than 17,000 Texans with MS throughout the Lone Star Chapter. Records continue to be set each successive year. In 2005, participants raised more than $9.6 million to fight multiple sclerosis. In 2006, the fund-raising amount increased to an incredible $11.4 million. Multiple sclerosis — a chronic, often disabling disease of the central nervous system — typically and ruthlessly strikes people in the prime of life between the ages of 20 and 50. Every week, 200 Americans are diagnosed with MS. Worldwide, MS affects 2.5 million.

However, thanks to thousands of riders, volunteers, donors and sponsors, the Lone Star Chapter is gaining momentum in research and treatment. Of the funds raised through this event, 83 cents of each dollar spent funds programs, research and national activities. This has paved the way for development of breakthrough drugs and treatment for the symptoms of MS.

The BP MS 150 is not a race, except in one sense: the race to find a cure. Every donation, sponsorship and dollar raised brings us all closer to a cure for MS.
